Film Project Update III - New Emulsion, 2025 Goals

Hello Everyone,

We want to continue with our film project updates. We are currently refining our third iteration of tabular grain emulsion. We successfully formulated and stabilized our third iteration of tabular grain emulsion. This emulsion features a finer grain structure and improved film speed of ASA 125, along with the integration of an anti-halation layer. We’re planning for a full release in 2025 across the following formats:

  • 135
  • 120
  • Sheet Film

Information regarding version 3 tabular grain emulsion:

  • This V3 tabular grain emulsion consists of 2-3 micron tabular grain crystals and a small amount of 1-micron cubic-octahedral crystals.
  • Negative density of 2.5, with a silver halide density of 5mg/m2.
  • The film will also feature the widest colour sensitivity range among civilian black-and-white films, achieving a range of around 380-700nm.
  • Grain sensitizers are incorporated into the sub-surface of the grain structure.
  • Spectral sensitization with blue and green sensitizing dyes originates from the now-defunct UK emulsion manufacturer; with red sensitizing dye originates from an old European emulsion manufacturer, its synthesis creates a tremendous result; it has allowed us to extend sensitivity range up to 700nm

This emulsion reflects the heart of our film project: to create film materials without historical baggage, third-party patent entanglements, or manufacturer dependency. It is built from the ground up - powered by creativity and user feedback. Our prototype assembly line is set to begin operation in June 2025, with V3 emulsion production following shortly thereafter.

We have also been developing an anti-halation layer for our film. However, we are currently testing and researching a more refined approach to traditional anti-halation layer methods. This anti-halation layer will be applied to our existing developing black-and-white film.

We are also currently testing and researching film in cinematic format, with approaches to various film formats, with the inclusion of 70mm film in the future:

We are also researching traditional-grain structure emulsion with ASA speed up to 400. We aim to complete developing and producing this film in 2025 as part of our initial release.

Lastly, with our future development plan, we are currently developing and researching instant peel-apart film, with plans on producing and making available black and white peel-apart film by 2025 in various format. We aim to have an update on our packaging and test shot for the next development/research progress installment. We are also researching, developing and producing colour reversal films that consist of a dye-incorporating development process, commonly known as K-14, for 135 and 120 formats in 2026.
